Pulse survivor Ricardo Negron reflects 1 year after shooting: “Every day I wish it didn’t happen”

  • Ricardo Negron had signed his receipt and was getting ready to leave Orlando’s Pulse nightclub when he heard gunshots. He saw people hit the floor, so he did the same. 
  • When the shots paused, he and others migrated to the back patio to wait for rescue. He had walked in at midnight to see a drag show, but he left a survivor of the worst mass shooting in modern American history.
  • Since that night one year ago, Negron has become one of the many Latinoswho has started to rebuild and care for Orlando’s Latino community, which the shooting devastated
  • As people like Negron soon saw, no infrastructure existed to help survivors and families. 
  • Through his work at the Hispanic Federation’s Proyecto Somos Orlando program, he has become part of the vanguard building it.
  • “It’s honoring. It’s humbling. At the same time, it’s scary,” Negron said in a phone interview. “Sometimes you feel like you can’t do enough because of all the needs that exist.” Read more (6/12/17)

  • One year after the fatal shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the Central Florida community came together on Monday to honor the victims through Orlando United Day.
  • Orange County, Florida, declared June 12, 2017 as Orlando United Day in honor of those affected by the attack.

  • The deadliest U.S. terror attack since 9/11 happened 365 days ago at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
  • On Sunday and Monday, LGBTQ marches and rallies taking place around the country are paying homage to the 49 people who were killed in the Pulse nightclub massacre.
  • Some of the survivors are scheduled to speak Sunday afternoon at the Equality March for Unity and Pride in Washington, D.C., one of dozens of simultaneous rallies taking place around the nation that will hold commemorative ceremonies honoring the Pulse victims.

Pulse shooting raw footage disturbs survivors, Orlando community as first anniversary looms

  • Survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting and Orlando community members are shocked after mutliple news networks aired raw police body cam footage showing the tragedy unfold.
  • Angel Santiago Jr., a survivor of the shooting, was sitting with a friend at a local bar in Orlando when he saw the footage running on the 11 p.m. news. 
  • Santiago said that the footage he saw took place in the room where he hid in the club that night. He asked the bartender to change the channel.
  • “They just kept replaying it over and over again,” Santiago said in a phone interview. “There’s no good that comes from that. What’s the purpose? It’s not going to change what happened.”
  • Santiago said he’s most upset with local Orlando affiliates who chose to run the footage knowing that the community is still reeling from last June’s tragedy. He said the decision shows a lack of regard for the survivors and deceased’s families. Read more (6/1/17)
