This week in the Trump-Russia investigation: Mueller follows the money as FBI probe hits 1-year mark

  • The FBI investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election turned 1 year old this week, and President Donald Trump marked the occasion as only he can: by mocking it.
  • “Have you seen any Russians in West Virginia or Ohio or Pennsylvania?” Trump asked during a West Virginia rally on Thursday. “Are there any Russians here tonight? Any Russians?”
  • Trump — who has repeatedly described the FBI’s probe and other investigations into his presidential campaign’s alleged ties to Russia as a “witch hunt” — told supporters at the rally that Democrats invented the “totally made-up Russia story” because they have “no message, no agenda and no vision,” and that allegations of collusion were “fake.”
  • But the investigations continued to ramp up this week as special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly impaneled a grand jury as part of his probe, a sign of the investigation’s increasing scope. Here’s what happened in the Trump-Russia investigations this week. (8/5/117, 4:1 0PM)

Report: Operative says he sought Clinton emails from Russian hackers, implicates Michael Flynn

  • According to a new exclusive report in the Wall Street Journal, Peter Smith, a Republican operative, sought out illegally obtained emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server.
  • Smith allegedly posted on Russian hacker forums asking for any potential information. In the posts he noted that he was working with former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
  • “He said, ‘I’m talking to Michael Flynn about this—if you find anything, can you let me know?’” Eric York, a computer-security expert from Atlanta who searched hacker forums on Smith’s behalf, told the Wall Street Journal. Read more (6/30/17)

Trump says he’s “100%” willing to testify under oath about James Comey meetings

  • Trump on Friday said he’s “100%” willing to testify under oath about what was said in his meetings with former FBI Director James Comey.
  • Trump made the assertion during a joint press conference with the Romanian president, Klaus Iohannis, in the White House Rose Garden.
  • He also said he never told Comey that he “hoped” Comey could let the investigation into Michael Flynn go.
  • “I didn’t say that,” Trump said, which amounts to accusing Comey of perjury — or willfully lying after taking an oath to tell the truth.
  • Trump went on to add that, “there’d be nothing wrong if I did say it,” referring to an ask to let the Flynn investigation go.
  • Reporters also asked Trump about whether he taped his conversations with Comey, as he suggested in a tweet last month.
  • But Trump refused to answer. “I’ll tell you about it over a very short period of time,” Trump said, referring to the tapes. Trump added that, “You’re going to be very disappointed” with his answer — not saying either way whether the tapes existed or not. Read more (6/9/17)

House Intelligence Committee sets deadline for Trump to produce taped Comey conversations

  • Leaders of the House Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation set a deadline for Trump to produce any taped communications between Trump and former FBI Director James Comey, saying if the tapes exist, Trump must submit them to the committee by June 23.
  • The deadline comes as Trump and top aides have continually declined to comment on whether tapes of those conversations — which Trump suggested he had — are real. Read more (6/9/17)

Michael Flynn lied to get security clearance, House Oversight Democrats say

  • Documents obtained by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform show that Michael Flynn lied to federal investigators.
  • According to a letter from ranking Democratic member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) to the committee’s chairman, Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), Flynn told Defense Department investigators in 2016 “U.S. companies” had paid for him to attend a gala with Russian President Vladimir Putin the prior year.
  • The payments were actually made by RT, a state-funded Russian television network known for news heavily-tilted toward Moscow’s line.
  • Flynn also appeared to have lied about whether the nature of his contact with Russian officials was “insubstantial.” Read more (5/22/17)

Mike Flynn will plead the Fifth. Trump once said that’s something only the guilty do.

  • Former national security adviser Michael Flynn will not comply with the Senate Intelligence Committee’s subpoena, and will instead invoke his Fifth Amendment rights, the Associated Press reported Monday.
  • The Intelligence Committee subpoenaed documents from Flynn relating to his interactions with Russia.
  • The Fifth Amendment gives people the right to decline to answer questions in legal proceedings so as to avoid self-incrimination.
  • Trump said last year that only guilty people invoke the Fifth Amendment.
  • Trump made those comments after three people involved in the Clinton email server pled the Fifth in the Congressional investigation.
  • “The mob takes the Fifth Amendment,” Trump said in September. “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?” Read more (5/22/17 11 AM)

The Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Michael Flynn on Russia

  • The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has issued a subpoena to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who resigned amid a storm of controversy after he lied to senior White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about a secret phone call with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
  • According to CNN, the subpoena is for documents relevant to Flynn’s interactions with Russian officials and was issued after “Flynn’s lawyer, Robert Kelner, alerted the panel that he would not provide documents in response to their April 28 request.” Read more (5/10/17)

Trump’s lawyers are reportedly trying to stop him from getting in touch with Michael Flynn

  • Heading off another instance of very bad optics, perhaps, Trump’s lawyers are struggling to keep him from “reaching out” to former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to the Daily Beast.
  • Two in-the-know sources reportedly told the outlet that the president is feeling something like guilt about the way Flynn’s ouster played out, and the way the media is handling the ongoing Russia investigation. Read more (5/11/17)

The White House ignored Sally Yates’ warnings about Michael Flynn and more takeaways from her testimony

  • After repeated delays and attempts to stifle her testimony, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates finally testified before Congress on Monday.
  • In a Senate judiciary subcommittee hearing about Russian interference in the 2016 election, Yates testified alongside former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and she did not disappoint.
  • During Monday’s hearing Yates revealed that she had spoken with the White House Counsel’s office twice in person and once by phone in order to warn the White House the then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was vulnerable to Russian blackmail.
  • Yet the White House waited another 18 days to fire Michael Flynn and only did so after the Washington Post got word that Yates had tried to alert the White House to the matter. Read more (5/8/17)
