CNN fires pro-Trump commentator Jeffrey Lord for tweeting a Nazi salute

  • CNN has fired contributor Jeffrey Lord after the commentator tweeted a Nazi salute, the cable news channel said on Thursday.
  • “Nazi salutes are indefensible,” a CNN spokesperson said in an email statement. “Jeffrey Lord is no longer with the network.”
  • Lord, an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, made the remarks during an online spat with Angelo Carusone, the president of the liberal media watchdog Media Matters. Read more (8/10/17)

Trump TV is here and its goal is to get him re-elected

  • Nearly nine months after Trump was elected, “Trump TV” is beginning to take shape as part of the president’s 2020 re-election ambitions.
  • The two hosts of pro-Trump videos that have been published on Trump’s Facebook page so far are Lara Trump — wife of the president’s son, Eric — and Kayleigh McEnany — a former pro-Trump commentator for CNN and a recently hired Republican National Committee spokesperson.
  • Both women ended their segments with the same sign-off: “And that is the real news.”
  • The Washington Post fact-checked McEnany’s claims, referring to the minute-and-a-half video as “state TV”; others despaired that the videos were an example of an overt propaganda effort.  Read more (8/8/17)

After CNN, the far right is declaring open season on journalists

  • The online far right has declared war on individual journalists and their privacy after CNN tracked down the identity of a right-wing meme-maker.
  • Though CNN didn’t reveal the memester’s identity, alt-right celebrities are leading a brigade of 4channers and Twitter’s most virulent trolls on a new mission: making journalists afraid to do their jobs.
  • Mike Cernovich, a conspiracy theorist famous for peddling “Pizzagate,” began tweeting veiled threats against CNN and other media outlets.
  • The online alt-right is answering Cernovich’s call on 4chan.
  • As they’ve done in the past with websites that have published stories unfriendly to the far right, 4chan trolls have posed elaborate instructions on how to strike back at CNN and individual, lower-level journalists with the purpose of making journalists across the country afraid to report.
  • “Discredit every journalist at CNN,” one user wrote. “No mercy on them. By seeings the shitstorm we are about to bring onto CNN, hopefully other [mainstream media] outlets will correct themselves.”
  • Cernovich is also expected to launch a new site with the purpose of attacking, doxxing and exposing individual journalists. Read more (7/6/17)

“You want to protect free speech and privacy? Embrace the idea that threatening the press for doing their jobs is damaging. Consider asking yourself who in history is known for trying to silence journalists for saying things that they don’t like. Then look at where you’re standing. Which side of history are you actually on?”

— Mikki Kendall, Neo-Nazis have threatened CNN employees’ families. Many writers already know what that’s like. (Opinion)

Trump continues to escalate his Twitter war on the press — should we pay attention?

  • On Sunday, the president tweeted a photoshopped video of himself wrestling a man with the CNN logo pasted over the man’s face.
  • It has since been revealed to have been created by a Reddit user with a history of virulently racist and anti-Semitic posts.
  • CNN has already responded to the tweet by calling out White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders for having falsely claimed that the president has never incited violence against the media.
  • The video tweet comes just days after Trump came under bipartisan fire for a sexist tweet he sent about Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski.
  • After more than four days of continuous coverage of the president’s salacious online presence, many are wondering how the country and the media should react to Trump’s tweets. Read more (7/3/17)

Donald Trump defends social media use on Twitter, tweets clip of himself beating up “CNN”

  • President Donald Trump took to Twitter once again Saturday evening and Sunday morning to defend his controversial use of social media — and tweet a video of himself assaulting a figurative CNN.
  • In the wake of recent criticism from those on both sides of the aisle regarding his Twitter comments about Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, Trump claimed in a tweet on Saturday that his use of social media is “not presidential — it’s modern day presidential.”
  • Trump also lashed out at the media in his Saturday tweets, using Twitter to once again mention his election win despite the “fake and fraudulent news media” and suggesting that he change his moniker for leading news source CNN from “#FakeNewsCNN” to “FraudulentNewsCNN.” Read more. Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough slam Trump’s “temper tantrum” in scathing op-ed

  • A day after Trump attacked MSNBC cohosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough on Twitter, calling them “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and “Psycho Joe,” the two slammed him in a scathing Washington Post op-ed.
  • They called out Trump’s obsession with their show as “unhealthy” and criticized his “West Wing temper tantrum.” Read more (6/30/17)

White House boots press from ethically questionable Trump International Hotel fundraiser

  • In a highly unusual move, members of the White House press pool were denied entry to Trump’s first re-election fundraiser at his Washington, D.C., hotel on Wednesday.
  • Members of the pool were “escorted to a separate room in the hotel,” where they remained while the event commenced, according to a press pool report
  • There has been a long-standing precedent of press pool members being allowed to escort the president even to fundraisers in private residences.
  • The hotel is not owned by Trump, but was leased from the General Services Administration before he assumed the presidency.
  • As Trump never actually divested from his businesses, but simply transferred day-to-day management to his adult sons, the arrangement appeared like a clear conflict of interest — and the president had already reportedly reneged on the terms of the lease. Read more (6/29/17)

Donald Trump says journalists are “fake.” But the president has told untruths nearly every day.

  • You may have heard the president is attacking the media again.
  • President Donald Trump’s series of “fake news” tweets targeting the New York Times and CNN came after the latter news organization retracted a story about a Trump associate and Russia.
  • Throughout the week, Trump and his administration said journalists are openly biased and perpetuating lies.
  • The irony? Trump himself has told dozens of uncorrected falsehoods since taking office. PolitiFact has seven pages of false statements made by Trump, most or all of which the president has not corrected.
  • The Times writes Trump has told a falsehood, or outright lie, nearly every day of his young presidency.
  • BuzzFeed News has a list of high-profile examples from the first few months of Trump’s presidency. Read more (6/29/17)
